Pipit turns your speech into text on your Mac. Your audio never leaves your Mac. Some features you choose send text to a service, and this page says which.

What goes where

API keys stay in your Keychain

The API key you enter for OpenRouter or your own server is kept in your Mac’s Keychain. So is your ChatGPT sign-in. Pipit sends a key only to the service it belongs to, and never syncs it.

Signing in is optional

Pipit works fully offline, with no account needed. Signing in only adds Sync across Macs, which backs up your dictionary and settings. You can skip it during setup and sign in later: click the bird at the top of Pipit’s window, or Sign In under Dictionary > Settings.

Reading your screen

Pipit doesn’t read password or sign-in screens. Screenshots used by Use on-device OCR are processed on your Mac and never uploaded. Words read from your screen can go to your AI provider with your text when AI cleanup or Draft is on. OCR needs the Screen Recording permission. See Permissions.

Usage data

Pipit collects anonymous usage data, such as whether setup finished, and crash reports. Private data like your transcriptions is never sent, and your audio never leaves your Mac. For the full details, read the privacy policy.
