# Voice commands

> Open apps, search the web, and run your own commands by saying them.

Start a dictation with a command phrase and Pipit does it instead of pasting text. Say "open notes" and Notes opens. Say "google pancakes" and a Google search for pancakes opens in your browser.

## Turn commands on or off

Voice commands are on by default. To change that, open Pipit, go to **Enhance** > **Voice Commands**, and switch **Listen for commands** on or off.

The other switches in this section only work while **Listen for commands** is on.

## Built-in commands

Use the same shortcut you dictate with. Say the command, then whatever goes with it. To see the full list in Pipit, open **Enhance** > **Voice Commands** > **Every command**.

| Group | Say | What happens |
| - | - | - |
| Web Search | "google \[query]", "duck \[query]", "search youtube \[query]", "wiki \[query]", "search reddit \[query]" | Searches Google, DuckDuckGo, YouTube, Wikipedia, or Reddit |
| Launch Apps | "open \[app name]", for example "open finder", "open safari", "open messages", "open notes" | Opens any app |
| AI Chat | "ask claude \[prompt]", "ask chatgpt \[prompt]", "ask perplexity \[prompt]" | Asks Claude, ChatGPT, or Perplexity |
| System Settings | "open wifi", "open bluetooth", "open sound settings", "open display settings" | Opens Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Sound, or Display settings |
| Pro Apps | "open premiere", "open photoshop", "open ableton", "open resolve" | Opens Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Ableton Live, or DaVinci Resolve |

Web searches and AI chats open in your browser, so your words go to the site you named.

## Commands while you dictate

Two commands work at the end of an ordinary dictation. Both are on by default, and each has its own switch under **Enhance** > **Voice Commands**.

| Switch | Say | What happens |
| - | - | - |
| **“Press enter” sends it** | "See you soon, press enter" | Pipit pastes your text, then presses Return, so a message sends |
| **“Paste clipboard”** | "Here's the link, paste clipboard" | Pipit drops in what you copied |

Say the command last. Your clipboard never goes to AI, even when AI cleanup is on.

If there's nothing to paste, Pipit says "Clipboard had no text, so nothing was dropped in." If Return couldn't be pressed, you'll see "Return wasn't sent. Focus a text field and check Accessibility." See [Permissions](https://pipit.mintlify.site/permissions.md).

## Your commands

You can add your own phrases under **Enhance** > **Voice Commands** > **Your commands**. Each one opens a link when you say its phrase, and the words you say after the phrase go along with it. That lets you, for example, add a task to a to-do app or start a chat in a project. Click **Add**, type your phrase in **When I say…**, and paste the link in **Open this link…**. Say the phrase as you typed it; capitals and punctuation don't matter. To remove a command, hover over it and click **×**.

For setup and examples, see the [voice commands guide](https://www.pipitvoice.com/voice-commands), also linked from **How to set these up** in Pipit.
