# Shortcuts

> Change the key you dictate with, and set up Enhance and Draft keys.

Your shortcuts live in **Home** > **Shortcuts**. Every shortcut is a single modifier key pressed on its own.

## Change your Dictate key

The Dictate key is **Fn/Globe** by default. To change it:

**1. Click the current key**

Go to **Home** > **Shortcuts** and click the key shown next to **Dictate**. It changes to **Press a key**.

**2. Press the key you want**

Press and release one modifier key on its own. You can also pick one of the keys listed below the row.

**3. Try it**

Hold the new key in any text field and speak.

To stop without changing anything, press **Esc** or click the key again.

### Keys you can use

Any one of these, on the left or the right side of the keyboard:

* **Option** (⌥)
* **Control** (⌃)
* **Command** (⌘)
* **Shift** (⇧)
* **Fn/Globe**

Left and right count as different keys, so **Right Option** and **Left Option** can do different jobs. Pipit suggests **Right Option** or **Right Command**, which rarely clash with other apps.

Key combinations and ordinary keys can't be shortcuts. If you press one, Pipit shows "Use a modifier key on its own, like Right ⌥, or fn." and keeps listening.

Each key can do only one job. If you pick a key that's already in use, Pipit keeps your old one and tells you, for example **Already used by Enhance or Draft** or "That key is already your Dictate shortcut."

### Using Fn/Globe

On its own, macOS uses the **Fn/Globe** key for things like opening the Emoji picker. While **Fn/Globe** is one of your Pipit shortcuts, Pipit sets the Globe key to do nothing so the two don't clash, and gives your setting back when you pick another key or quit Pipit.

If Pipit can't change it on your Mac, **Home** shows a note: **Set Globe key to "Do Nothing"**. Click **Keyboard Settings ↗**, then set what pressing the Globe key does to **Do Nothing**.

## Enhance and Draft keys

Until AI is set up, **Home** > **Shortcuts** shows one row, **Enhance and Draft**, with a **Set up AI** button. See [AI cleanup](https://pipit.mintlify.site/ai-cleanup.md). Once AI is set up, you get two more rows, each with no key until you set one:

* **Enhance**: "Cleans up what you say." Dictate as usual, and Pipit cleans up the text with AI before pasting it.
* **Draft**: "Writes it for you, from your screen." See [Draft](https://pipit.mintlify.site/draft.md).

Set them the same way as the Dictate key. To remove one, click its key and choose **Remove**.

> [!NOTE]
>
> With AI cleanup on and no Enhance or Draft key, every dictation is cleaned up with AI. Once you set an Enhance or Draft key, your Dictate key pastes your words without AI cleanup, and you choose AI only when you want it by using the other key.

## Fixed shortcuts

These can't be changed:

| Key | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Esc** | Cancels the dictation in progress. A **Transcript cancelled** card offers **Undo**. |
| **⌃⌘V** | Pastes your last dictation again, in any app. |

All of Pipit's shortcuts need the **Accessibility** permission. Without it, Pipit can't hear your keys, and the overlay says "Accessibility is off, so Pipit can't hear your shortcut." See [Permissions](https://pipit.mintlify.site/permissions.md).
