> What stays on your Mac, and what leaves it, feature by feature.

Pipit turns your speech into text on your Mac. Your audio never leaves your Mac. Some features you choose send text to a service, and this page says which.

## What goes where

| Feature | What it uses | Leaves your Mac? |
| - | - | - |
| Dictation | Your voice | No. Speech is turned into text on your Mac. |
| Voice model download | Nothing about you | Pipit downloads the voice model once, and **Improve name recognition** downloads a small helper. Nothing you say or type is sent. |
| AI cleanup with **ChatGPT** | Your dictated text, plus context: the app and window you're in, text around your cursor, your dictionary words (including ones Pipit learned), and names read from your screen when **Read names on screen** is on | Yes, to OpenAI, through your ChatGPT account. Only when AI cleanup is on. |
| AI cleanup with **OpenRouter** | The same as above | Yes, to OpenRouter and the AI company whose model it runs. Only when AI cleanup is on. |
| AI cleanup with **Your own** server | The same as above | Yes, to the server at the URL you entered. If that server runs on your Mac, such as Ollama or LM Studio, nothing leaves your Mac. |
| [Draft](https://pipit.mintlify.site/draft.md) | What you say, any text you selected, and the text visible on screen | Yes, to the AI provider you picked. Screenshots are not sent. |
| **Read names on screen** and **Use on-device OCR** | Text and names on screen. OCR also uses screenshots. | No, except that names go with your text to your AI provider when AI cleanup is on. Screenshots never leave your Mac. |
| Clipboard history | What you copy | No. |
| Transcription history | The text of your dictations | No. Audio is not saved. |
| [Transcripts](https://pipit.mintlify.site/transcribe-files.md) | The audio and video files you add | No. Files are transcribed on your Mac. **AI Summary** sends the transcript's text to your AI provider. |
| [Voice commands](https://pipit.mintlify.site/voice-commands.md) | What you say after the command | Web searches and AI chats open in your browser, so the words go to the site you named. **“Paste clipboard”** never sends your clipboard to AI. |
| **Sync across Macs** and signing in | Your email and name, your dictionary, and your Pipit settings, such as writing styles, custom instructions, and shortcuts | Yes, to Pipit's servers, only while you're signed in. API keys, history, and audio are not synced. |
| **Send Feedback** | Your message, your email if you add it, your Pipit and macOS versions, and your voice model. Bug reports also say whether Microphone and Accessibility are on. | Yes, to the Pipit team, only when you send it. |
| Anonymous usage data | Events such as whether setup finished, and crash reports | Yes, to Pipit. Private data like your transcriptions is never sent. |

## API keys stay in your Keychain

The API key you enter for OpenRouter or your own server is kept in your Mac's Keychain. So is your ChatGPT sign-in. Pipit sends a key only to the service it belongs to, and never syncs it.

## Signing in is optional

Pipit works fully offline, with no account needed. Signing in only adds **Sync across Macs**, which backs up your dictionary and settings. You can skip it during setup and sign in later: click the bird at the top of Pipit's window, or **Sign In** under **Dictionary** > **Settings**.

## Reading your screen

Pipit doesn't read password or sign-in screens.

Screenshots used by **Use on-device OCR** are processed on your Mac and never uploaded. Words read from your screen can go to your AI provider with your text when AI cleanup or Draft is on. OCR needs the Screen Recording permission. See [Permissions](https://pipit.mintlify.site/permissions.md).

## Usage data

Pipit collects anonymous usage data, such as whether setup finished, and crash reports. Private data like your transcriptions is never sent, and your audio never leaves your Mac. For the full details, read the [privacy policy](https://www.pipitvoice.com/privacy).
