# Install Pipit

> Download Pipit, open it the first time, and get through setup.

Pipit needs a Mac with Apple Silicon and macOS 15 or later.

## Download and open

**1. Download**

Download Pipit from [pipitvoice.com](https://www.pipitvoice.com).

**2. Open the disk image**

Double-click the downloaded file to open it.

**3. Move Pipit to Applications**

Drag Pipit into the **Applications** folder.

**4. Open Pipit**

Open Pipit from your Applications folder. The first time, macOS asks whether you want to open an app downloaded from the Internet. Click **Open**.

## Setup

The first time Pipit opens, it walks you through a short setup.

1. **Welcome to Pipit**: click **Get Started**.
2. **Permissions**: click **Grant** next to **Microphone** and **Accessibility**, and allow each one when macOS asks. Pipit needs both to work. See [Permissions](https://pipit.mintlify.site/permissions.md) if one won't turn on.
3. **Language**: choose **English Only** or **Multiple Languages**. You can open **View all 25 supported languages** to check yours. The voice model starts downloading here: a one-time download of up to about 1.2 GB. You need an internet connection for it. After that, transcription works offline.
4. **Find Pipit in the Menu Bar**: look for the bird in your menu bar. That's where your recent dictations and clipboard history live.
5. **Sign In**: completely optional. Signing in syncs your dictionary and settings across your Macs. Click **Sign In with Browser**, or **Skip for now**. Pipit works fully offline with no account.
6. **Say hello**: a short practice dictation. Hold your shortcut and read the line under **Say this out loud**. If the voice model is still downloading, you'll see **Getting your voice ready** until it's done. You can choose **Skip for now** and practice later.
7. **Welcome to Pipit!**: click **Start Using Pipit**.

Then try [your first dictation](https://pipit.mintlify.site/first-dictation.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> If you use **Fn/Globe** as your shortcut and pressing it opens the emoji picker, open System Settings > **Keyboard** and set the Globe key to **Do Nothing**. Pipit usually does this for you, and shows a reminder during practice when it can't.

## Start at login and the Dock icon

Both switches are on the **Home** tab, under **App Preferences**.

* **Launch at Startup**: starts Pipit when you log in. On by default.
* **Hide Dock Icon**: runs Pipit from the menu bar only. This needs the menu bar icon, which shows only while **Save clipboard history** is on (**Enhance** tab > **History**).

## Updates

Pipit checks for updates and installs them automatically. To check now, click **Check for Updates** at the bottom of the **Home** tab.

## Uninstall

1. Quit Pipit: click the bird in the menu bar, then **Quit**. Or press **⌘Q** while Pipit's window is in front.
2. Drag Pipit from your Applications folder to the Trash.
3. Optional: open System Settings > **Privacy & Security** and remove Pipit from the **Accessibility** and **Screen & System Audio Recording** lists, and turn it off under **Microphone**.
