# History and menu bar

> Find past dictations and clipboard items, and choose what Pipit keeps.

Pipit can keep your past dictations and the things you copy, so you can find them again from the menu bar.

## Choose what Pipit saves

Open the **Enhance** tab and scroll to **History**.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Save transcription history** | On by default. Saves your dictations on this Mac. Off keeps only your latest dictation, for **Paste last dictation**. |
| **Save clipboard history** | On by default. Saves what you copy. It also shows the menu bar icon, so turning it off hides the icon. |

Clipboard history skips passwords and other items that apps mark as private. While **Save transcription history** is off, the menu bar's **Transcriptions** tab says **History is off**.

Below the switches you'll find:

* **Transcriptions**: how many are saved on this Mac. **Export…** saves a CSV file of **Transcriptions Only**, **Clipboard Only**, or **Both**. **Clear…** permanently deletes your saved transcriptions.
* **Paste last dictation**: **⌃⌘V** pastes your latest transcription again, in any app.
* **Clipboard items**: how many are saved. **Clear…** permanently deletes them.

Pipit keeps your recent history and removes older items over time. Pinned items are kept. **Clear…** and **Clear All** remove everything, pinned items included.

## Use the menu bar

Click the Pipit icon in the menu bar to open its popover.

* **Search** finds text in the list.
* Switch between the **Clipboard** and **Transcriptions** tabs.
* Click an item to copy it. You'll see "Copied", then the popover closes so you can paste.
* Right-click an item and choose **Pin to Top** to keep it at the top of the list. Choose **Unpin from Top** to undo that.

At the bottom of the popover:

| Item | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Paste Last Dictation ⌃⌘V** | Pastes your latest dictation into the app you're using. |
| **Open Pipit** | Opens the main window. |
| **Clear All** | Clears every item in the tab you're on, after you confirm. |
| **Quit** | Quits Pipit. Your shortcuts stop working until you open it again. |

The popover may show a banner:

| Banner | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Accessibility needed** | Pipit can't type for you until it's allowed in System Settings. Click **Open Settings** and turn Pipit on. See [Permissions](https://pipit.mintlify.site/permissions.md). |
| **History isn't being saved** | Pipit couldn't save history on this Mac, so items go away when Pipit quits. |

The menu bar icon turns orange when Accessibility is missing.

## Open Pipit when the menu bar icon is hidden

If **Save clipboard history** is off, Pipit has no menu bar icon, and it shows its Dock icon instead. Pipit still runs and your shortcuts still work.

To open the main window, open Pipit again from your Applications folder or Spotlight. If Pipit is already running, this brings up its window rather than starting a second copy.
