# Dictionary

> Teach Pipit the names and words it should always get right.

The **Dictionary** tab holds the names, product terms, and jargon you want Pipit to spell your way: a coworker's name, your company's product, a medical or legal term. Pipit spells the words in your dictionary correctly more often.

## Add words

1. Open Pipit and choose the **Dictionary** tab.
2. Type in the **Add words, separated by commas** field. You can add one word or several at once, for example `Sudhanva, Kubernetes, Acme Cloud`.
3. Press **Return** or click **Add**.

Words you already have are skipped, and the field tells you what was added.

## Find, edit, and delete words

* **Search** filters your words as you type.
* The filter menu narrows the list by **Source** (**All**, **Manual** for words you added, or **Learned** for words Pipit picked up), **Date Range** (**This Week**, **This Month**, **All Time**), and **Sort By** (**Frequency**, **A-Z**, **Date Added**).
* Click a word to edit its spelling or **Delete** it. A learned word also offers **Promote**, which makes it one of your own words.
* To act on many words at once, click **Select words** next to search, pick the words, then choose **Export**, **Promote**, or **Delete**.

## Words Pipit learns from your edits

When you correct a word Pipit got wrong, Pipit can learn your spelling.

* **The Learned card.** Sometimes a small card appears in the overlay, for example "Learned Sudhanva not Sadhana". If that's not what you meant, click **Undo** and the card changes to "Won't learn".
* **In Training.** Review suggested corrections in the **In Training** section of the Dictionary tab. Hover over one to approve it (add it to your dictionary) or reject it (remove it).

To start over, use **Reset learned corrections** in Settings below. Words you added yourself stay.

## Settings

The **Settings** section sits at the bottom of the Dictionary tab.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Improve name recognition** | "Gets names right more often, slightly slower." On by default for new installs. The first time it's on, Pipit downloads a small helper once. |
| **Read names on screen** | "Helps spell names you can see." On by default. It needs no extra permission. |
| **Use on-device OCR** | Appears when **Read names on screen** is on. "For apps that hide their text." It needs Screen Recording permission, and [Draft](https://pipit.mintlify.site/draft.md) needs it too. Screenshots are processed on your Mac and never leave it. |
| **Sync across Macs** | Shown while you're signed out. Click **Sign In**; once you're signed in with the same account on each Mac, your dictionary syncs between them. |
| **Import or export** | **Import…** reads plain text, CSV, or JSON files of comma-separated words. **Export** saves your words as plain text, CSV, or JSON. |
| **Reset learned corrections** | Clears the corrections Pipit learned from your edits. Words you added stay. This can't be undone. |

> [!NOTE]
>
> Pipit doesn't read password or sign-in screens. If [AI cleanup](https://pipit.mintlify.site/ai-cleanup.md) is on, words read from your screen may be sent with your text to the AI provider you picked, to help with spelling. See [Privacy](https://pipit.mintlify.site/privacy.md).

## What to add

* People's names, especially ones with unusual spellings.
* Company, product, and project names, with the capitalization you want (`GitHub`, `iOS`, `Acme Cloud`).
* Technical terms, acronyms, and jargon from your field.
* Words Pipit keeps getting wrong.

You don't need to add everyday words. Pipit already knows them.
